The GoE is investing in national social protection programmes that aim to strengthen human capital, provide access to essential services, access jobs, and protect vulnerable individuals and communities from adverse socio-economic shocks.  This, in turn, contributes to tackling poverty, improving resilience, increasing access to opportunities and ensuring equity[i]. The GoE is engaging with development partners to strengthen its capacity for effective service delivery and social protection across all sectors to secure basic living standards for the Egyptian population, particularly the most vulnerable.

National School Feeding

WFP’s mission is to ensure that all school aged children have access to school meals and are healthy and ready to learn. The school feeding programme supports governments in establishing sustainable national school feeding programmes with the ultimate goal to encourage and facilitate national government ownership of these programmes.

Egypt

WFP complements the GoE in delivering an integrated package for schoolchildren by using schools as an exceptionally cost-effective platform for food delivery. In 2021, the temporary closure of community schools and other operational bottlenecks due to the COVID 19 put the national school-feeding programme on hold. Despite the hurdles faced, WFP’s school feeding programme complemented the national programme by targeting schools in the poorest governorates through the provision of unconditional cash assistance.
