It focuses on micro, small and medium enterprises and entrepreneurship. The Enterprise Development Agency has contributed to alleviating poverty and improving the living standards of low-income families and communities by supporting micro, small and medium enterprises in all the Egyptian governorates to establish micro-income-generating activities in agriculture, craftsmanship and commerce.
To ensure sustainability, WFP provided capacity strengthening to Government officials and NGO partners through training on micro-lending management and methodologies, including lending manuals and the usage of financial and monitoring systems. Also, WFP provided training of trainers (TOT) for young women in the enterprise and provided microloans for the women beneficiaries to launch or expand on income-generating activities.
Using WFP-provided sun-drying units, tomato farmers underwent training on crop storage, meanwhile contributing to the increase in market value for tomatoes. Additionally, farmers were trained on the use of pomegranate arils separation and refrigerating units. These agro-processing techniques offer valuable economic diversification and income generating opportunities for small-scale food producers.
WFP in partnership with the Central Bank of Egypt, National Bank of Egypt, and Banque Misr, launched a national programme to support rural communities with agri-business and financial literacy, benefiting 26,600 community members in their economic transition and contribution to Egypt’s formal economy.
